WONDERFUL AFRICAN TALES

Storytelling is part of the fabric of African culture

The African wilderness has inspired untold generations of storytellers who have passed their tales down through the ages, helping to explain the world around them and the iconic wildlife species that share it with them.

Every African culture has a deep-rooted tradition of folklore with colourful depictions of how the wilderness works and the untold relationships between animals and humans.

We love these traditional African stories, like this one, about a young boy who went to his grandfather, asking him: “Grandfather, is it true that the lion is the king of the jungle?”

The old man looked at his grandson curiously and said, “Yes, my son, this is true, but why do you ask?” The boy said: “Well, Grandfather, if this is true, then why is it that in all the stories I read and all the ones I hear, man will defeat the lion? How can this be true?”

The old man looked at his grandson lovingly and said: “It will always be that way, my son, until the lion tells the story.”

Then there's the tale of how the sun and moon came to be in the sky... At the dawn of time the sun and water were great friends and lived on earth together. Sun visited water, but Water never returned his visits.

At last, Sun asked Water why he never came to his house and Water replied that Sun's house was not big enough and that if he came with his people, Sun would be driven out. Water said Sun should build a big compound big enough for him and all his people.

So, Sun built the compound and invited Water to visit him. Water arrived and began to flow into the compound, accompanied by all the fish and water animals, filling it quickly. Sun climbed onto the roof for safety, but Water continued to flow, until Sun had to climb into the sky, where he has remained ever since.

Stories like these remind us of how wonderful it is to be part of the African landscape. And how much we want to share it with you, our treasured guests.
